Find The Needle Demo Max Drone Capacity: What We Know

No official maximum drone capacity has been published for the Find The Needle demo.

Quick Answer

No official maximum drone capacity has been published for the Find The Needle demo. Neither the Steam pages nor the developer's patch notes give a number, and no reliable guide confirms one, so we do not invent a figure here. Your in-game tooltip is the only exact source for your build.

What is confirmed: drones are part of the game's automation, each one needs a licence and a pickup, they dig hay up to 12 meters away, and they must sit on the floor to work. In practice, players hit performance limits from physics before they run out of machines.

Is There a Drone Cap in the Demo?

We checked the official Steam store page, the demo page, the developer's announcements and the main community guides. None of them lists a maximum number of drones or a drone carrying capacity for the demo. Community pages that cover drones say outright that they do not include capacity figures.

Because the demo is patched often, any number from an older video may be out of date. We only show what official or cross-checked sources confirm.

What Drones Do in Find The Needle

The official Steam description lists drones among the automation you build, next to robots, conveyor belts, hay wrappers, paper machines and sorting machines. Their job is to dig hay from the pile so you do not have to. Trailer coverage also shows sorting drones in a late-game line.

Drones are one of several collectors. Robotic arms and piston rakes do the same job in different ways, and most factories mix all three.

Drone Requirements and Range

According to the community wiki, a drone needs a licence plus a pickup before it works. It digs hay up to 12 meters away. It also has to be placed on the floor.

  • Buy the drone licence in the tech tree.
  • Make sure it has its pickup set up.
  • Place it on the warehouse floor, not on a belt or machine.
  • Keep it within 12 meters of the hay you want it to dig.
  • Connect it to power like your other machines.

What Really Limits How Many Drones You Can Run

Money and power are the first limits. Every machine draws electricity, and when the grid is short, everything slows down together. Add hay generators before you add more collectors.

Performance is the second limit. Steam warns that very large factories are CPU heavy and that a faster CPU keeps the frame rate up late in the game. One demo player found that physics and collisions capped them at about 20 robotic arms, and the same physics load applies to any collector.

Range is the third limit. As the pile shrinks, drones placed at the old edge run out of hay within 12 meters. Move them inward, or they sit idle.

Best Drone Placement

Place drones in a ring at the base of the pile, close to your main conveyor. That keeps the distance from pile to belt short. Pair them with scanners on the belt so any needle they dig up gets flagged.

Do not crowd too many collectors into one spot. Spread them around the pile so each has its own hay to work on. See our layout guide for a full plan.

Drones vs Robotic Arms

Robotic arms are the best-documented collector so far. At base level an arm moves 60 straw every 5 seconds, and one tester measured roughly 3,500 strands per minute per arm at max level. Arms work from a fixed spot next to the pile.

Drones reach up to 12 meters from where they sit, which helps cover hay further from your belt. Most good factories use both, plus piston rakes.

Powering a Drone Fleet

Every machine you add draws power from the grid. When demand is higher than supply, all machines slow down together, and in one run everything dropped to 63% speed. The V8 update added a warning when power falls below the needed level.

Build extra hay generators and feed them from the main belt with a splitter. Generators can also be levelled up when the grid cannot carry the load.

Scaling Up Safely

Add collectors a few at a time and watch your frame rate and income after each step. If income stops rising, the bottleneck is elsewhere, often the belt or the sell stand. If the frame rate drops, you have hit the physics limit for your CPU.

Steam recommends a 6-core CPU and 16 GB of RAM for large factories. Read our PC requirements guide for the full specs.

How to Find the Exact Number in Your Build

Open the drone entry in the tech tree or build menu and read its tooltip. Upgrades and capacities are shown there for the exact build you are running. That is more accurate than any number shared online.

We will update this page if the developer publishes official drone stats. Until then, the confirmed facts above are the safe basis for planning.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the max drone capacity in the Find The Needle demo?

No official number has been published. Check the drone tooltip in your own build.

How far can drones dig?

The community wiki says drones dig up to 12 meters away.

Why do my drones stop working?

Check power, check that they sit on the floor, and move them closer if the pile has shrunk out of their 12-meter range.

Do drones need power?

Like other machines, they run on your power grid, so add generators as your fleet grows.

Are drones better than robotic arms?

They do different jobs. Arms work from a fixed spot, while drones dig up to 12 meters away. Most factories use both.

Where should I place drones?

On the warehouse floor near the base of the pile, within 12 meters of the hay and close to your main belt.

Can the demo handle a huge drone fleet?

Performance is the practical limit. Steam warns very large factories are CPU heavy, and one player hit a limit around 20 arms.
